Objectives:
1- To create a space dedicated to recreational reading.
2 - Awaken, motivate and extend the love for reading in English.
3- Develop imagination and creativity through literature, audiovisual and
recreational resources offered by a reading room.
4- To expand the student's world view, open his mind to other realities and cultures,
especially to English-speaking cultures.
5- Awaken in the student the need to develop his own creations in English.
6- To use the reading as main tool in the process of teaching and learning the
English language.
Identification of the need: For three years the Colombia Bilingual program gave teachers and students of the Acción Comunal School physical and human resources that brought them closer to real English, which allowed them to listen, see and learn expressions of daily life. Without the native teachers in class, the teachers must have in our classroom a reference of real English. One way to do it is through books, the stories that tell in English the real life of a culture different from ours.
Reading helps to expand vocabulary, to know expressions, to understand language structures, but the big problem is that students don´t read, and often it isn´t because they don´t want or can´t to read in English, the problem is that there isn´t a material or spaces adapted to have a pleasant reading.
How do you propose to solve the problem?
The school, in its PEI (Institutional Educational Project) must provide the necessary means to help create readers, to promote reflective attitudes towards the different means of disseminating culture, and to awaken interest in reading as a means of entertainment and as an important space for the leisure.
For this, it´s necessary to promote within the school a space exclusively intended to encourage and promote the love of reading. This space must meet the precise conditions to create an environment of relaxation where the student will discover for himself what his literary preferences are and feed on them. It will allow English teachers to use these new worlds as an excuse to clarify the grammatical, phonetic, semantic and pragmatic doubts that may have.
This reading room will help not only the students and teachers of the Acción Comunal School, but also all those schools that want to use this space. In Fusagasugá there isn´t an exclusive space for reading and using the English language. The creation and correct use of a reading room will open a new way of bringing young people to English.
Implementation time:
The estimated time to create the reading room will be one semester. During this time, the space must be located, furniture adapted, have physical and virtual books, classify the material and select the manager of reading room (a person who speak English) and elaborate the rules that must exist in this space. At the same time, English teachers must prepare the modifications to the curriculum where the use of the room and recreational reading are the axis of English teaching and present it to academic coordination to be evaluated.
After the creation of the room, modification of the curriculum and its execution, English teachers will be able to develop this pedagogical strategy during the 2019.
